Stuck in the Healing Cycle: The Cell Danger Response

Your body knows how to heal. When it can't finish the healing cycle, something is usually in the way.

Kim ran a yoga studio. She was strong, managed multiple employees, and was thriving. Then her symptoms started to stack up: confusing, relentless, and dismissed as "permanent."

She saw provider after provider. Each one treated the symptom in front of them.

The real cause was hiding behind her condo walls and a dusty white powder on the shoes in her closet: mold.

No prescription was going to fix that. Something had to come out. Once it did, her body did what bodies are built to do. It finished healing.

Kim's story is a perfect picture of an idea UC San Diego researcher Dr. Robert Naviaux has spent years studying: the cell danger response, and what happens when it gets stuck.

Two questions: what makes us sick? And what makes us heal?

Most of medicine asks one question: what's making you sick? That's pathogenesis, the study of how disease develops. It's essential, and it has saved countless lives.

But it's only half the picture.

In the late 1990s, psychologist Dr. Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania flipped psychology's question. Instead of only studying what makes people depressed, he studied what makes people happy. That shift launched Positive Psychology and a whole new field of research.

The same flip is now happening in physical health. Dr. Naviaux calls it salugenesis: the study of how living things heal. The word comes from Salus, the Roman goddess of health. (It shares a root with salud, the Spanish word we say after a sneeze and when we raise a glass.)

Naviaux describes pathogenesis and salugenesis as two stages of one problem. First, something injures us. Then the body has to complete a healing cycle to recover. His key insight: chronic illness often lingers not because the original trigger is still there, but because healing never finished.

The cell danger response, simplified:

Think of the cell danger response as your cells' smoke alarm.

When a cell senses a threat (an infection, a toxin, an injury, even intense stress), its mitochondria change gears. They stop focusing on making energy and start sounding the alarm. One of the main alarm signals is ATP, the cell's energy molecule, released outside the cell to warn its neighbors.

The cell then goes into lockdown. It hardens its membranes, stops communicating normally with nearby cells, and waits until the danger passes.

That's protective. It's exactly what you want in a crisis.

In a healthy body, the alarm rings, does its job, and then shuts off. The cell then moves through the three phases of the healing cycle Naviaux describes:

  1. Inflammation: clear the threat and clean up the damage
  2. Proliferation: rebuild and replace what was lost
  3. Differentiation: cells return to their specialized jobs and normal systems biology and teamwork

Here's the problem. If the alarm never fully shuts off, cells can get stuck in one of these phases. Think what would happen if the power grid goes down in your town and there were no police, fire, or trash collection for weeks? Naviaux's research links that stuck state to the symptoms of chronic disease and to faster aging.

In real life, that can look like:

  • Fatigue that doesn't match how much you rest
  • Brain fog and anxiety that come and go
  • Bloating, food reactions, and gut symptoms that keep spreading
  • Autoimmune flares, rashes, or pain with no clear trigger
  • "Normal" labs while you know something is off

What keeps the alarm ringing: the four buckets

Most conventional care for chronic symptoms works by turning the volume down: silencing the immune system, numbing nerves, propping up brain chemistry. Those tools have their place, and sometimes they're exactly what's needed.

But salugenesis asks a different question: what's blocking the healing?

In my practice, I see the same four buckets filling up again and again, and genetics determine how big your detox bucket is: is it the size of a teacup or a dump truck?

Bucket

What it can include

Chronic infections

Lingering viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic loads; gut overgrowths like SIBO

Environmental toxins

Mold, heavy metals, pesticides, plastics, poor indoor air

Stress and trauma

Chronic stress, unprocessed trauma, a nervous system stuck on the gas and the brake pedal at the same time.

Nutrient deficiencies

Gaps from diet, absorption, or genetics that leave cells without the raw materials to repair

No single bucket has to overflow. They add up. Each one tells your cells the danger hasn't passed, so the alarm stays on.

That's why chasing one symptom at a time so often stalls. You can treat the gut, but if mold keeps coming in through the air you breathe, your cells never get the all-clear.

Where to start: your environment

The order matters. If you start by attacking an infection while your body is still flooded with toxins, you can make things worse. (I learned this one the hard way in my own healing journey.)

That's why I start almost every client with their lifestyle and their environment. It's the bucket you have the most control over, and it refills every single day. Naviaux himself points to pollution as one of the reasons chronic disease keeps rising.

A few simple first steps:

  • Air: You breathe roughly 20,000 times a day, mostly indoors. Open windows, run a good air filter, and check for moisture or musty smells.
  • Water: Filter your tap water and cut back on plastic bottles.
  • Food: Store and heat food in glass instead of plastic, and choose organic for the foods you eat most.

Once the incoming load slows down, the rest of the work (clearing infections, filling nutrient gaps, calming the nervous system) has a real chance to stick.

Ready to find out what's blocking you?

If you've seen the specialists, tried the diets, and still feel stuck, you're not broken. Your healing may just be blocked.

In my signature group program, we work through all four buckets in the order your body needs, with genes-first guidance, a review of your labs, and a group of people on the same path. Enrollment is always open.

Book a free 30-minute call Root Cause Clarity Call, and we'll talk about where your bucket is overflowing.
